(KFGO/KNFL) Four was the magic number for the Barnesville football team on Friday.
In the program’s fourth championship game appearance, the Trojans intercepted Chatfield quarterback Sam Backer four times in a 35-20 win in the Class AA championship at U.S. Bank Stadium on Friday.
The Trojans finish the season 13-0, avenging the semifinal loss to the Gophers last season. Barnesville tight end Tate Inniger accounted for, you guessed it, four touchdowns on the day.
With Chatfield holding an 8-7 lead, Inniger caught touchdowns passed of 8 and 28 yards late in the 2nd quarter to make it 23-8 Trojans. Both scores were the result of Chatfield turnovers. Chatfield answered back as Backer scampered 17 yards for a score with :11 left in the first half to make 23-14 at halftime.
Inniger hauled in another score late in the third quarter, as quarterback Zach Bredman found him for a 9-yard TD pass to finish off a 73-yard, six-minute drive to increase the Barnesville lead to 29-14 with 1:07 remaining. Chatfield responded again, as Backer scored from one yard out to make it 29-20 with 9:52 remaining in the game.
The Trojans sealed the game late, as Inniger scored again, this time on a 1-yard run to make it 35-20. Gannon Bolgrean picked off Backer with 3:29 left, and Barnesville successfully ran out the clock.
Owen Riddle intercepted a pair of passes, and Ethan Larson added another interception. John Roller led a balanced run game for the Trojans with 104 yards on eight carries.
Backer combined for 293 yards on offense (182 rushing, 111 passing) but turnovers hampered Chatfield the entire game, as the Trojans forced five total turnovers.
