Grand Forks, N.D. – After kicking off the 2022 season last weekend at Nebraska, North Dakota will open both its home slate and MVFC season this weekend, hosting Northern Iowa. The contest between the Fighting Hawks and Panthers will take place at the 56th annual Potato Bowl.
Last weekend, North Dakota rallied from a 10-point deficit and knotted the game up at 17 late in the third quarter at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers responded with 21 unanswered points to come away with the victory. The Fighting Hawks were trailing by one score (24-17) heading into the final stanza and the game was tied 7-7 at intermission.
Isaiah Smith enjoyed his third 100-yard rushing game of his career, pacing UND at Nebraska with 104 yards on just 10 carries. Tyler Hoosman scampered for 41 yards and a score on 10 carries of his own in his first game in green and white.
Tommy Schuster was efficient once again with 24 completions for 131 yards and a touchdown. Bo Belquist was his favorite target, hauling in six catches for 40 yards. Adam Zavalney also found the end zone and now has eight career touchdowns, tying him for sixth on the UND top-10 Division I touchdown receptions list.
For Northern Iowa, Logan Wolf and Sergio Morancy both recorded their second career touchdowns last week, but Air Force won the season opener by a tally of 48-17. The Panthers led the game in passing yardage with a 286-109 yard advantage, but Air Force lived up to its reputation for rushing, netting 582 yards on the ground and 691 yards of total offense.
North Dakota enters Saturday with a 43-12 record in the Potato Bowl and has won the two most recent contests, defeating Drake 38-0 last season and beating Sam Houston State 27-23 in 2019.
The 56th Potato Bowl will air live on ESPN3 as the MVFC Game of the Week and will be carried on the Home of Economy Radio Network with the pregame show starting at 2 p.m. On the radio, Jack Michaels and Tom Dosch will have the call with Paul Ralston serving as the sideline reporter.
