ST. PAUL, Minn. – Top Democrats at the state legislature say they want to make sure that Minnesotans’ whose student loans are forgiven or reduced under President Biden’s executive order don’t have to pay state income taxes on that relief.
Senators Ann Rest and Kari Dziedzic say they’ll press legislation as soon as they can to prevent any tax consequences for those with student loans.
House Tax Committee Chairman Paul Marquardt from Dilworth says it’s another reason to have a special session.
Senate Republican Majority Leader Jeremy Miller says it’s something to look at when the legislature is back in session, but Republicans have been resistant to hold a special session.
