SUPERIOR, Wisc. – A Duluth man will spend ten years in federal prison for leading police in the Twin Ports on several high-speed chases, stealing guns and attempting to rob a bank.
The U-S Attorney’s Office in Wisconsin says 31-year-old Cody Nelson was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty. Investigators say Nelson stole two cars last October in Duluth and eluded authorities before stealing three handguns and four rifles from a home in Superior.
He drove to a bank drive-thru window, pointed a gun at a teller and fled across the Bong Bridge to Duluth. Police say he was taken into custody after barricading himself in a West Duluth apartment and firing at a SWAT team.
Nelson told the judge he was a drug addict and unable to stay clean during the pandemic.
