FARGO, N.D. — Fargo-Moorhead shortstop Sam Dexter went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in the only runs of the game and led the RedHawks (41-20) to a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Monarchs (39-22) on Saturday night. Dexter is now 4-for-8 with a double, home run, and three RBI in the series.
Kansas City opened the scoring in the first inning as third baseman David Thompson scored on a wild pitch by RedHawks starter Tanner Riley. Thompson stole three bases in the loss. Riley only pitched in the first inning and allowed the one run on two hits and a walk but struck out the side before being relieved by left-hander Brady Stover.
Fargo-Moorhead was held hitless until the fourth inning but took the lead on an RBI single from Dexter and a wild pitch from Kansas City starter Jon Harris. Harris allowed the two runs on three hits and two walks and struck out two batters in five innings pitched.
Kansas City tied the game in the fifth inning when center fielder Darnell Sweeney scored on a wild pitch from Stover. The left-hander entered in the second inning and pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four batters.
Reliever Brandon Koch (2-2) came into the game in the sixth inning and earned the loss after allowing one run on one hit in an inning pitched. Koch also hit a batter in the loss. The run was unearned as center fielder Evan Alexander scored on an error from Monarchs’ third baseman David Thompson. Left-handers Jordan Martinson and Jacob Lindgren pitched the final two innings of the game. Martinson allowed a run on a Sam Dexter RBI double in the eighth inning.
Joe Jones (3-1) earned the win after allowing only one hit in three innings pitched. Jones struck out one batter in the win. Alex DuBord pitched in the ninth inning and allowed a double but got out of the inning without allowing a run and earned his league-leading 17th save of the season.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Kansas City Monarchs will conclude their three-game series with a game tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. RHP Davis Feldman (5-2, 3.73 ERA) will start in the series finale for the RedHawks while RHP Justin Donatella (1-1, 10.26 ERA) will start for the Monarchs.
