FARGO, N.D. — The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (34-13) continued their winning ways at home on Tuesday night as they defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-23) by a score of 4-2 at Newman Outdoor Field. RedHawks starter Peyton Wigginton (3-1) earned the win after allowing only two runs on six hits and three walks and struck out seven batters in seven innings pitched.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the top of the first inning after stringing together a walk and two hits to make it a 1-0 game. First baseman David Washington drove in the run on an RBI single.
Fargo-Moorhead responded right away in the bottom of the inning and scored three runs on three hits and two walks. Leo Piña drove in the tying run on a fielder’s choice and Evan Alexander made it a 3-1 game with a two-run single. Alexander led Fargo-Moorhead with two hits and two RBI in the win.
Winnipeg right-handed starter Luis Ramirez (5-2) earned the loss after pitching six innings and allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
The game would remain 3-1 until the seventh inning when Goldeyes designated hitter Logan Hill hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to one run. However, the RedHawks again responded instantly in the bottom of the inning. Sam Dexter hit a leadoff double and eventually scored on a Manuel Boscan sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 after seven innings.
Winnipeg relief pitcher LHP Travis Seabrooke allowed the run on one hit. RHP Bryan Blanton then pitched a scoreless eighth inning despite allowing a walk.
After Wigginton left the game RHP Joe Jones struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth inning before handing the ball to closer Alex DuBord. The right-hander allowed a single and a walk to lead off the inning but eventually induced a 6-4-3 double play to finish the game. DuBord picked up his league-leading 14th save of the season in the win.
The RedHawks and Goldeyes will continue their three-game series at Newman Outdoor Field with a game tomorrow night at 7:02 p.m. RHP Davis Feldman (3-2, 3.69 ERA) will start in game two for Fargo-Moorhead and will face Winnipeg starter RHP Alex Manasa (2-2, 3.60 ERA).
