DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO/KDLM) – With extremely hot temperatures expected this weekend, the Becker County Sheriff’s Office is reminding lake goers to remember key safety tips.
Sheriff Todd Glander says he expects this weekend to be quite busy, but cautions boaters to slow down, wear a life jacket, stay sober and be weather aware.
There were nearly 70 boating accidents across the state last year including 18 fatalities. Last week, a 20 year-old from Fergus Falls drowned after jumping from a pontoon in Big Detroit Lake.
The Minnesota DNR says alcohol is the leading cause of boating related deaths in the state.
