MOORHEAD (KFGO) – The Minnesota Legislature’s session ended without passing important bills leaving municipalities including Moorhead in a tough situation.
Moorhead Director of Government Affairs Lisa Bode told the city council the failure is “extremely disappointing.”
She said among the many bills not completed is the tax bill. Not only does it include the language that Moorhead wanted on modification of its sales tax, it also includes funding for the last portion of the city’s Red River flood control project, in all some $4 billion in tax cuts for Minnesota. Bode said, “that bill is like it’s in a display case and we can’t get to it.”
Mayor Shelly Carlson is hoping the city council hears a more positive report at its next meeting in two weeks if the legislature goes into a special session. She said the city has vital interests at stake in the bonding and tax bills.
Democratic Gov. Tim Walz met Monday afternoon with Republican Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller and Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman. But the governor acknowledged afterward that they’re still searching for common ground, and he has no immediate plans to call a special session.
