
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics)– In a physical game that featured 45 total fouls, North Dakota fell 75-68 to South Dakota inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Monday night.
Paul Bruns recorded the fourth 20-point performance of his career and led UND (4-13, 0-4 SL) with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Tsotne Tsartsidze just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and eight boards. Bentiu Panoam and Matt Norman each had 11 points apiece, while Panoam dished out a team-high three assists.
Brady Danielson battled all night and finished with eight rebounds to tie his career-high and a had career-best four steals to go with five points.
Four players for South Dakota (8-7, 1-3 SL) finished with more than 10-points, led by Kruz Perrot-Hunt and Mason Archambault each finishing with 19 points.
In the game, the Coyotes shot 47.5 percent overall. Comparatively, the Fighting Hawks finished with a shooting percentage of 34.9. USD did most of its damage in the paint with a 38-24 advantage, while UND held an 8-2 advantage in made triples. Both teams finished with 23 free throw attempts and South Dakota made 17 to North Dakota’s 16.
The Fighting Hawks finished with advantages in steals (7-4), bench scoring (12-6) and points off turnovers (14-3).
In a game that featured seven lead changes, North Dakota started off with a 5-0 run. By the under-16 media timeout, South Dakota held a 11-10 edge that North Dakota quickly turned into a 17-15 advantage midway through the opening period after a Panoam triple and an Ethan Igbanugo layup.
The back and forth game continued until strong defense from the Coyotes forced the Hawks to go scoreless in the final five minutes of the half to put the Coyotes up 39-28 at the break. Despite the 11-point deficit, both teams handled the ball well in the opening 20 minutes with only seven turnovers combined (four for UND, three for USD).
South Dakota increased its lead to 43-30 early in the second half but a 5-0 run from North Dakota, highlighted by Norman layup and a Bruns triple, trimmed the deficit down to 43-35 with just over five minutes out of the second half.
Bruns caught fire on the second half and scored his 11th point, seventh of the half off a driving layup to bring the deficit down to 45-40 by the second media timeout. Following that point, South Dakota strung together a couple runs and found itself up 60-43 with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest.
The Hawks continued battling throughout the second half and used an 13-4 run over a three-minute period late to find itself trailing 69-64 with 41 seconds left. Tsartsidze and Norman were the leading scorers during the 13-4 run with four points apiece to close the gap.
The Coyotes managed to close the game out, going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe in the final 41 seconds to hold on for the 75-68 win.
