The Central Cass Squirrels got off to a blazing start and never looked back against Lisbon, as they trampled the Broncos 41-8 in Week 6 of North Dakota 11B football.
Running back Owen Wiersma totaled 155 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, and quarterback Brendan Maasjo threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns to lead a bounce back effort for the Squirrels after being shut out by Kindred last week.
Central Cass struck first with a 10 yard TD pass from Maasjo to Jake Deutsch at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter. Later in the first, Wiersma found the end zone on a four yard rush to make it 14-0.
In the second quarter Wiersma capped off another Squirrels drive with a rushing TD, this time from six yards out to extend their lead to 21-0. Later in the frame at the 3:32 mark, Deutsch provided the spectacular highlight of the night, reeling in a one handed catch in stride and taking it the distance for a 74 yard TD. The halftime score read 28-8 in favor of Central Cass.
The Squirrels got on the board again in the third quarter with one yard TD plunge from Wiersma to push the score to 35-8. Massjo then threw a TD dart to Will Ellison from 22 yards out later in the third to make the final tally 41-8.
Lisbon’s heralded rushing attack was held completely in check, as the Broncos’ only points came via a 20 yard touchdown return off a blocked punt in the second quarter. They were limited to fewer than 150 yards of offense.
Central Cass improves to 5-1 and 3-1 in Southeast region play; conversely, Lisbon falls to 4-2 and 3-1 in region contests. The Squirrels travel to Ellendale/E-K next Friday, while the Broncos will host Oakes.
