FARGO, N.D. – (FM RedHawks) After the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Chicago Dogs traded leads all game long on Tuesday night, John Silviano delivered the knockout blow with a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal a 6-5 win in front of 938 people at Newman Outdoor Field. The RedHawks take a two games to one advantage in the North Division Championship Series with the win and are now one win away from an appearance in the American Association Finals for the first time in franchise history.
Chicago took a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning after two runs scored on a two-out fly ball off the bat of Brennan Metzger that was dropped in left field by Kevin Krause, but Fargo-Moorhead answered back when it mattered in the ninth. Nick Novak started the rally with a pinch hit single and came around to score the game-tying run on a wild pitch by Chicago LHP Jeff Kinley (0-1, 0.00 ERA). Dylan Kelly reached on an error by the Chicago shortstop and Leo Pina beat out a throw to first — that would have completed a double play and sealed the win for the Dogs — to bring Silviano to the plate.
The RedHawks had taken their first lead of the ballgame in the seventh inning when a wild pitch brought home Correlle Prime to give Fargo-Moorhead a 4-3 lead.
Sam Dexter and Alex Boxwell each had multiple hits tonight for the RedHawks, with Dexter going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Both teams got solid starting pitching on Tuesday, with F-M LHP Matt Tomshaw (1-0, 1.23 ERA) and Chicago RHP Michael Bowden (0-0, 4.26 ERA) each going at least six innings while allowing three or fewer earned runs. Tomshaw finished his seven innings on the mound with three runs against, two earned, and eight strikeouts against two walks.
RHP Luke Lind (1-0, 3.00 ERA) earned the win for the RedHawks after throwing a perfect ninth inning. RHP Joe Jones also made a strong appearance for F-M, holding the Dogs to two unearned runs in the eighth inning on just one hit. Kinley picked up the loss for Chicago.
The RedHawks and Dogs will meet for Game 4 in the best-of-five North Division Championship Series on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Fargo-Moorhead is slated to go with RHP Bret Helton (1-0, 3.60 ERA) against Chicago LHP Christian Friedrich (0-1, 5.14 ERA) in the pitching matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m
