Canady, Maag, Turner and Waletzko voted in by teammates
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – With kickoff only 12 days away, the University of North Dakota has announced its team captains for the 2021 football season. As voted on by their teammates, Jordan Canady, Garett Maag, Jaxson Turner and Matt Waletzko have earned the honor.
Canady, Maag and Turner were team captains during the spring season of 2020-21, marking the first time in program history that North Dakota football has had three returning captains on the same team. The trio are also 16th, 17th, and 18th players to be named team captain multiple times in the football program.
A safety, Canady has made 29 starts for the Fighting Hawks while appearing in 37 total games. The fifth-year senior and New Berlin, Wis., product has accounted for 20 pass deflections in his career as well as 120 solo tackles, knocking on the door of both career top-10 lists entering the season. Canady has also registered seven interceptions during his career at North Dakota.
With 19 starts to his credit and 29 career appearances, Maag has finished among the top-two in several receiving categories for the Fighting Hawks in the last three seasons. He led UND in catches (25), receiving yards (523) and yards per game (74.41) during the 2020-21 season. The Inver Grove Heights native was an honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection last season.
Turner, the oldest Fighting Hawk on this year’s roster at nearly 24 years old, has made 39 career appearances for the University of North Dakota and has cemented himself as one of the top-pass rushers in program history. With 16 career sacks, the Esko, Minn., native is tied for seventh all-time in UND history in the category and could become just the third player in program history to reach the 20-sack milestone.
A consensus Preseason All-American and Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch lister this fall, Waletzko has made 22 career appearances for the Fighting Hawks and helped paved the way for two All-American running backs in John Santiago and Otis Weah. He was a second team All-MVFC selection in addition to earning First Team All-Academic Missouri Football Football Conference honoree last season.
