FARGO (KFGO) – The Cass County Jail expansion project is right on schedule.
The work is being done in two phases. The first started at the end of April and should be completed by November. The second phase work will follow and is expected to be completed in June of 2022. The project includes a new sally port, or prisoner transfer section, and the renovation of the existing sally port for much-needed additional space in areas which had become cramped. On average, the jail handles between 280 and 290 inmates daily.
“When phase one is all complete we’ll have a brand new garage, additional processing and intake space, and 10 new additional cells. Then after those upgrades, renovations to the existing booking area will be completed,” Jail Administrator Captain Andy Frobig said.
Frobig says the bids for the project came in around $4.7 million, much lower than the original estimate of $5.8 million and when the pandemic hit, it was clear the jail was in “dire need” of changes.
COVID-relief funding is paying for the project.
