LAMOURE COUNTY, N.D. (KFGO) – Jeff Piehl farms near Marion in Lamoure County, North Dakota, and says he’s “shell-shocked” by torrential rain that hit the area Monday night and early Tuesday, flooding fields and roads. It didn’t stop for hours.
At first, Piehl says it appeared the storm would miss the area but the system changed direction and headed his way. A check of the rain gauge at 10:30 p.m. showed more than an inch of rain at his farm and it appeared the rain was over. He says, “we were tickled, it was just perfect.” With worries about drought conditions, the rain was needed. But an hour later, there was more rain and it didn’t stop for hours. Almost 7 inches of rain fell at his farm. He says farm equipment used for seeding Monday is now marooned on some of the high ground as are some cattle.
Piehl says he had just re-seeded 500 acres of soybeans damaged by frost several weeks ago and that new crop will also take a hit, unlikely to be replanted again.
