HOUTSTON, TX – Charles Oliveira won the UFC lightweight championship in spectacular fashion knocking out Michael Chandler in the second round of the UFC 262 main event.
Oliveira and Chandler had a back-and-forth first round in which the Brazilian got to Chandlers back before being slammed backwards onto the cage floor. Chandler ended the round raining down punches in Oliveira’s guard.
Oliveira regained his composure between rounds, coming into the second round with renewed fury. He connected with a left hook that dropped Chandler, Oliveira followed this up with a barrage of ground and pound punches that forced the referee to stop the fight just 19 second into the second round.
Olivera, becomes the 11th undisputed lightweight champion in promotion history in his 40th professional fight. “I never thought about giving up, I always believed in it. I got into the UFC to be the champion and my time would eventually come. It’s here now,” Oliveira said of his journey to UFC gold.
The co-main event saw Beneil Dariush put on a dominant performance against former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
