GRAND FORKS, N.D.– University of North Dakota junior starting goalie Adam Scheel has been named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List, announced Tuesday. He is one of five NCHC goaltenders on the initial list for the top goalie in college hockey and one of 35 in the country after a smashing start to his 2020-21 season.
The Lakewood, Ohio product has five wins over nationally-ranked opponents this season and his 12 wins for the year rank second in the NCAA. He sports a 1.99 goals against average and a .927 save percentage for the year with a sparkling 12-3-1 record in net. He’s added three shutouts to his resume this season and has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of his 16 starts, including five in the month of January alone.
In January, Scheel posted a 6-2-0 record with league-leading totals of 1.84 GAA, .929 save percentage and a pair of shutouts helping North Dakota ascend to first place in the NCHC (38 points) with six games remaining in the regular season.
Awarded since 2014, the Mike Richter Award was previously administered by “Let’s Play Hockey” Magazine, but is now overseen by the HCA. A committee of voters, made up of coaches, administrators, scouts and media, will pare the Watch List down to approximately 15 names within the next two weeks. From those names, the committee will then choose a winner, who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four.
The NCHC is home to two previous Mike Richter Award winners in former North Dakota goalie Zane McIntyre in 2015, which was the second Richter Award ever given, and former Denver netminder Tanner Jaillet in 2017.
